Relaxing your body and mind
Stress is your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. When your body senses danger its defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction or the stress response, which is its way of protecting you. During the stress response, your nervous system releases a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, which rouse the body for emergency action. Your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, breathing quickens, and senses become sharper.
The stress response should be short and brief, but if it becomes prolonged or frequent, it could lead to changes in behavior and physiology and develop into chronic stress. Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body and can lead to serious health problems.
The most dangerous characteristic of chronic stress is its insidious nature. You get used to it and it starts to feel familiar and even normal. You don’t notice how much it’s affecting you even as it takes a heavy toll. That’s why it’s important to be aware of the common warning signs and symptoms of chronic stress.
Cognitive symptoms
You should seek to reduce these symptoms of chronic stress by yourself or with the assistance of a professional.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an excellent form of alternative medicine for reducing chronic stress and relaxing your body and mind. TCM has been utilized for over 3000 years and a large number of recent clinic studies have supported acupuncture as a means of reducing symptoms of chronic stress. (See references 1-5 below.) In addition, laboratory scientists have found evidence supporting acupuncture as a treatment for chronic stress. (See references 6-10.)
